A Guide to the Compact Keyboard

The Compact is a wireless mechanical keyboard with a control knob, and it connects three ways — USB-C, 2.4GHz, and Bluetooth. This guide covers first-time setup, pairing, the knob, the lighting, and the FN layer.

First-Time Setup

  1. Slide the connection switch on the keyboard to your mode: USB, 2.4G, or BT
  2. Set your operating system: FN + A for Windows, FN + S for Mac
  3. Pair with your device using the instructions in Connection Modes
  4. Press FN + Enter at any time to check the battery level

Connection Modes

The Compact supports three connection modes, selected by the switch on the keyboard: USB-C wired, 2.4GHz wireless, and Bluetooth.

Bluetooth Mode (3 Devices)

  1. Slide the switch to BT
  2. Press FN + W (Device 1), FN + E (Device 2), or FN + R (Device 3) — the matching key flashes rapidly
  3. Open Bluetooth settings on your device and select the keyboard from the list
  4. On a successful connection, the key backlight syncs with the overall backlight
  5. To switch between paired devices later, press FN + W / E / R

2.4GHz Wireless Mode

  1. Slide the switch to 2.4G
  2. Press and hold FN + Q — the Q key backlight flashes quickly
  3. Plug the 2.4GHz receiver into a USB port on your computer
  4. On a successful connection, the key backlight syncs with the overall backlight

Wired Mode

  1. Slide the switch to USB
  2. Connect the USB-C cable to the keyboard and your computer — plug and play, no drivers

Windows / Mac Mode

Set the layout to match your computer:

  • FN + A — Windows mode
  • FN + S — Mac mode
Note: If your keys are typing the wrong symbols or the modifier keys feel swapped, you're in the wrong OS mode — press FN + A or FN + S to switch.

Battery Saver: Lower the backlight brightness or turn it off to extend wireless battery life. Brightness and animation speed are set in VIA.

Control Knob

The knob has two roles — multimedia and backlight — and you switch between them with a long press.

  • Turn: Volume (multimedia role) or cycle backlight effects (backlight role)
  • Press: Mute / unmute
  • Press and hold for 3 seconds: Switches the knob from multimedia to backlight control — then turn it to change the lighting effect

Note: The F-row media and system shortcuts follow the Windows / Mac mode you set with FN + A / FN + S. If a shortcut behaves unexpectedly, check which mode you're in first, then see the printed card that shipped in the box.

Battery, Charging & Indicators

Charging

  1. Connect the USB-C cable to the keyboard and a power source
  2. You can keep typing in wired mode while it charges
  3. Press FN + Enter to check the current battery level

Indicator Lights

Indicator Meaning
Caps Lock White when Caps Lock is on
Charging — solid red Charging in progress
Charging — solid green Fully charged
Charging — flashing red Battery critically low — charge now
Sleep Mode: The keyboard sleeps after 5 minutes of inactivity in wireless modes. Press any key to wake it. If it won't wake, charge for 15–20 minutes first.

Keyboard Care

Cleaning

  • Wipe the surface with a soft, lint-free cloth
  • Use compressed air to clear dust from between the keycaps
  • For stubborn marks, use a barely-damp cloth with mild soap — never let liquid enter the keyboard

If a Key Stops Responding

Try a different connection mode and a factory reset (FN + Space, hold 3 seconds) first. If a key still isn't registering, contact support — don't disassemble the keyboard yourself.

Which keyboard is this guide for?

How do I pair a Bluetooth device?

Slide the connection switch to BT, then press FN + W (device 1), FN + E (device 2), or FN + R (device 3) — the matching key flashes rapidly. Pick the keyboard from your device's Bluetooth list. When it connects, the key backlight syncs with the overall backlight. You can keep three devices paired at once.

How do I switch between my paired Bluetooth devices?

Press FN + W, FN + E, or FN + R to jump between the three channels.

How do I set up the 2.4GHz receiver?

Slide the switch to 2.4G, press and hold FN + Q until the Q key flashes quickly, then plug the receiver into a USB port. It connects on its own — the key backlight syncs with the overall backlight once it's done.

Wired, 2.4GHz, or Bluetooth — which should I use?

Wired (switch to USB) means no battery to think about. 2.4GHz is the one for gaming — wireless with low latency. Bluetooth is for hopping between a laptop, tablet, and phone.

Does it work with both Mac and Windows?

Yes. Press FN + A for Windows mode or FN + S for Mac mode — this remaps the modifier keys and the function-row shortcuts. There's no physical switch; it's the key combo. If your keys are typing the wrong symbols, you're in the wrong mode.

How do I check the battery level?

Press FN + Enter and the keyboard shows the current charge.

What do the indicator lights mean?

Caps Lock glows white when it's on. While charging, a solid red light means charging and a solid green light means full. A flashing red light means the battery is critically low (below 3.3V) — charge it now.

How do I change the RGB effect or colour?

Press FN + Backspace to cycle the backlight effects and FN + Delete to change the colour. You can also press and hold the knob for 3 seconds to put it in backlight mode, then turn it to scroll through effects. Brightness and animation speed are set in VIA.

Why is the knob cycling my lighting instead of changing the volume?

Press and hold the knob for 3 seconds to switch it between multimedia mode and backlight mode. In multimedia mode, turn for volume and press to mute. In backlight mode, turn to cycle the lighting effects.

A key feels loose or stopped working — what should I do?

Try a different connection mode and a factory reset first (FN + Space, hold 3 seconds). If a key still isn't registering, contact support — please don't open up or disassemble the keyboard, as that can cause further damage.

Can I remap the keys?

Yes — this keyboard is VIA-compatible, so every key and the knob can be reprogrammed. A full remapping walkthrough is on the way; in the meantime you can use usevia.app with the Q61 V2 configuration file.

How do I factory reset it?

Press and hold FN + Space for 3 seconds to restore the keyboard to its default settings.
